2011 World Series 2
Tipperary, Sunday August 15th 2010
A blistering hot sunny day welcomed the Irish National Hot Rods back to Tipperary for round 2 of the new qualifying series. Eight cars were present, although 493 Anthony Crosbie didn’t get his Corrado beyond attempting a few practice laps mid-meeting. The seven that did race had a familiar look about them, including the return to competition after a while away by Anthony Butler in his Haird 206CC. The race meeting was notable for some of the cleanest National Hot Rod combat ever seen at Tipperary, with plenty of proper outside line racing involving most of the racers, all of whom emerged with great credit for an entertaining show.

961 Tom Casey disqualified from final for causing the demise of 420 Eddie Wall exiting turn 2. 420 excluded from the re-start as the cause of the red flags being aired. 777 Les Compelli may well have won the final but something failed catastrophically on his Tigra with 1 lap to go, and he then failed to take the chequers in any position.

World Series 2010

2010 World Series round 16 - Tipperary - Saturday June 5th 2010.
A fine and sultry early summer’s evening welcomed the National Hot Rods to their final world qualifier of the year at Tipperary. The track conditions were perfect for maximum grip and speed, and the stadium itself reflected former glory days, thanks to commentator Maurice Walsh spending a day during the week mowing the grass.

With the six qualfiers from the Republic already determined, the main focus this evening was on who could lift the Irish points championship. This battle was between Ireland’s brightest teenage talent, David O’Regan, and the experienced campaigner Des Cooney. Aptly they shared a grid row all night, but with Cooney only needing to follow O’Regan home in each race, the odds looked stacked in the Tipperary man’s favour.

And so it proved. Les Compelli headed heat one after Brendan O’Connell’s car wasn’t so quick off the line, and Cooney made a lightning quick breakaway to follow - though not seriously challenge - Compelli’s victory. O’Regan kept well in touch with the leaders as Shane Murphy, having made a tentative start to the race, came well into contention in the closing laps. Tom Casey had a subdued race, concentrating on his SLK’s set up, he led home O’Connell and Denis MacSweeney.

Heat two saw a similar start with Compelli looking for a repeat win, but this time he left too much space later in the race entering turn three, and Cooney, under pressure from Murphy, got his nose inside the 777 Tigra. Too late, Compelli tried to shut him off, the 921 Tigra briefly forced onto the infield kerb, but the move stuck and Compelli ended up being railroaded several positions back. Despite further pressure from Murphy, Cooney left no such gaps and took the victory.

The final was a fine climax to the season, Les Compelli and Shane Murphy spending a good proportion of the laps side-by-side in a hard but cleanly fought battle. Compelli gave Murphy all the space he needed around the wide outside, but Murphy’s best efforts to make a pass stick came to nought, O’Regan taking advantage of his fellow Cork-man’s daring to pull off a good pass up his inside for second place. So Compelli took the honours on track, whilst Cooney’s fourth place confirmed him as winner of the points title in Ireland.

2010 World Series round 15 - Tipperary - Saturday May 29th 2010
The penultimate 2010 round was also the first Saturday night racing of the year at Tipperary, and the racing weather gods conspired to make Rosegreen the only area in Ireland with persistent wet conditions throughout. David Casey sat this meeting out - having already qualified - to celebrate his birthday, but the eight-car average was maintained with the return of Brendan O’Connell in his SHP CC.

The damp and greasy track necessitated rolling starts for the heats, and the dark arts of tyre choice and wet/slick combinations were key to success this evening. Shane Murphy dominated the first race from last on the grid, O’Connell battling well to maintain second from David O’Regan, Tom Casey and Les Compelli. Heat two was probably the race of the night as we were treated to some proper Hot Rod round-the-outside racing by Des Cooney - his Tigra looking the class of the field in this race after a disappointing opener. The final went the way of another driver who had had a quiet night thus far, but Tom Casey it was who took the chequers after some stout defending from the ever eager O’Regan. Cooney and Murphy followed them home after some interesting place-swapping, in front of Denis MacSweeney and O’Connell.

The final 2010 Irish world qualifying round is at Tipperary next Saturday night.
Heat 1: 970 761 208 961 777 982 921 308

2010 World Series round 14 - Tipperary - Sunday May 16th 2010
Now nearing the end of his first full season in National Hot Rod racing, David O’Regan proved with some style that he is well worthy of his lofty points qualifying position in the Irish series.  The Co. Cork teenager and his Tigra - set-up now personally overseen by English Hot Rod guru Sonny Howard - took a heat and final double at round 14, pole-sitter Les Compelli taking the other race win.

2010 World Series round 13 - Tipperary - Sunday April 25th 2010
Meeting three of the year for the Nationals saw what are becoming known as the “usual suspects” - just eight of them - contesting the thirteenth World Series round at Tipperary.

Les Compelli and David Casey shared the front row for just heat one, as apparent clutch problems saw the 777 car start the remainder of the meeting from the back of the grid.  Shane Murphy had an advantageous front row position outside of the newly signwritten David O’Regan Tigra in the second group of cars on the grid, and the yellow 970 Tigra spent quite a bit of the afternoon on the wide and dusty outside line putting passes on Casey junior.  Three victories over the red and white Corrado were Murphy’s reward.  The three third places were shared by Tom Casey, O’Regan and Des Cooney, Casey senior having an awkward heat two when his SLK’s rear bumper wrapped itself around the wheel necessitating a mid-race pit stop in the centre green to untangle it. Denis MacSweeney and Tom McSweeney completed the other positions except for the final which McSweeney sat out.

The promoter’s representative, commentator Maurice Walsh, announced the following at the drivers briefing: racing next Sunday 2nd May has been cancelled for all classes, and the next world series round for National Hot Rods will now be Sunday May 16th.  The 16th of May meeting was originally scheduled to be the Davey Evans Memorial championship held over from last year; Walsh announced this will now be run on a date to be announced.

2010 World Series round 12 - Tipperary - Sunday April 18th 2010
The second meeting of 2010 saw the same participants as two weeks ago, plus the newly-licenced Tom McSweeney christening his ex-Murphy CC on a National Hot Rod grid. Nothing else new on the car or driver front, so David O’Regan and Les Compelli formed the front of the grid and shared the day’s wins between them.

Heat one saw Compelli sweep off to lead an uneventful race, livened up briefly when Des Cooney went into turn one a bit hot, upsetting Shane Murphy and David Casey’s dice, and collecting the first black cross of the year.

In the next heat, Compelli went way too deep into turn one and lost a shedload of places, handing the win to O’Regan. David Casey doggedly defended his second place from fierce challenges by both Murphy and Cooney.

No mistakes from either O’Regan or Compelli in the final saw them head home in that order, and Casey junior might have had more to say in that outcome had his gearbox not failed in turn four causing consternation for those immediately following, and his own retirement. A close run to the line culminated in Murphy taking third from Cooney, Tom Casey with a quiet day’s racing to fifth, some way ahead of Denis MacSweeney and Tom McSweeney.

2010 World Series round 11 - Tipperary - Sunday April 4th 2010
The first chance for National Hot Rods to be raced in anger at Tipperary since last October saw a disappointing seven car entry. An eighth was on hand, but Tom McSweeney had overlooked licensing with the NHRPA to race his new ex-Murphy 206cc, so joined the local Hot Rod class for the day.

The fine but windy afternoon had an unusual looking grid line-up with Shane Murphy allocated pole position for the three races, which he duly converted into three wins for his new Tigra.  As he said afterwards, “It’ll be a greater achievement when I can do that from the back of the grid!” Des Cooney had an unfortunate start to life with his new Tigra, ending his first heat on the infield with a broken front panel - Tom Casey’s SLK helping it towards its off-track excursion. After repairs Des took his new mount to two impressive second places.  David O’Regan shared the front row of the grid with Murphy, his Tigra featuring new paintwork for 2010, and he collected a good few points towards his Ipswich qualifying campaign. Les Compelli looked to have plenty of pace but some small handling issues in his partially refurbished Tigra, and David Casey would have picked up more points had his father not had an altercation with the Casey Junior Corrado in the second heat.  Denis MacSweeney completed the runners in the venerable John O’Regan 206.  Next outing for the Nationals in Ireland is in two weeks time when hopefully a few more of the Tipperary racers will join the fun.

2010 World Series round 10 - Tipperary - Sunday October 25th 2009
The final points scoring meeting of 2009 attracted 11 cars; David Casey continued his good form from the last round with two heat wins, Neville Stanley keeping everyone at bay for the final victory.

2010 World Series round 09 - Tipperary - Sunday October 18th 2009
Just a week after the European Championship, and it was business as usual for the Tipperary racers with the resumption of world qualifying.  Round 9, the penultimate for this year, saw ten cars take part in an overcast but dry raceday.

Eddie Wall led them away for heat one, but his SLK’s handling looked increasingly to be a handful as first Neville Stanley, then David Casey headed a whole host of cars who eventually passed him. Stanley and David C duelled for a while until David C made a move stick and headed home for his first victory of the day.  Shane Murphy looked sharp for third place, challenging Stanley all the way, ahead of Les Compelli, Des Cooney, David O’Regan and Tom Casey.

Wall joined Tom McSweeney at the back of the grid for heat two as they both attempted to cure technical issues with their two cars of very different vintages. This time Murphy was the man on the move, shadowed by David C as a whole host of cars passed underneath Stanley. Stanley settled ahead of Tom C who tried every which way to make a pass on the Laois pilot until it all went wrong on the home straight. Contact from Casey senior forced Stanley into the mother of all racing saves as he just managed to retrieve his CC from going straight to the scene of what would have been a huge accident. A caution period followed during which the 961 car was disqualified for his part in causing the yellow flag period. As Stanley caught up with the Waterford racer’s SLK leaving the track, the steward believed contact was made between the two, and Stanley too was removed from the restart.  This proved to be a wrong call from the official - Stanley merely gesturing and shouting his thoughts on Casey’s manouevre, the 967 black flag subsequently lifted and apologies given.  Murphy headed home the remaining 5 laps from David C, Cooney, O’Regan and Compelli.

After all that excitement, the final merely underlined the raw pace of David C once again as he led home for his second victory of the day. Stanley had a less troubled run for a good second place finish ahead of the real battle of the race involving O’Regan, Tom C, Compelli and Cooney.  A thrilling final lap saw Tom C. claim the third place spot by what must have been less than an inch as he and O’Regan crossed the line with a cigarette paper’s width between them.  Compelli led home Cooney, with Wall and Denis MacSweeney completing the finishers.

The last round before the winter world series break is next Sunday 25/10 at Tipperary Motor Speedway.
Heat 1: 261 967 970 777 921 208 961 420 982

2010 World Series round 08 - Tipperary - Sunday September 27th 2009
The last chance to race a National Hot Rod at Tipperary before the European Championship on October 10 saw Ulster star - World and British runner-up - Glenn Bell join the action.  The visitor brought the ex-Rudy Myburgh Davy McCall-built white and orange Tigra down for some race miles, and joined ten local drivers in their world qualifying quest.

A mild but overcast afternoon greeted the cars as they gridded for heat one, and it was Eddie Wall that took the early lead from pole position. Some unnecessary contact from David Casey sent the SLK spinning and brought out yellow flags for everyone, and a black flag for Casey. Wall got going again and joined the back of the grid for the restart that saw David O’Regan take up the running. O’Regan withstood the pressure from Des Cooney in second place for the win, Tom Casey, Les Compelli and Damien Mulvey completing the top five.

Heat two saw David Casey pass Neville Stanley and Brendan O’Connell before a tidy pass this time on Wall got him heading for the chequers, Cooney second again from Tom C, Wall and Compelli.

David C was the man on form for the final, some good racing from the second generation Waterford racer boding well for the title race upcoming in less than two weeks. Wall drove his best race of the day for second, from O’Regan, Tom C, Compelli and Cooney. Visitor Bell had shown some bursts of pace through his afternoon of developing the Tigra, but at this stage you might put more money on him being a championship contender in his 206CC.
Heat 1: 208  921 961  777 955  761 967  420 (9)  308 (261 disq)

2010 World Series round 07 - Tipperary - Sunday September 20th 2009
Another late summer Sunday of fine weather greeted just eight cars for the latest world qualifying round at Tipperary Motor Speedway, Les Compelli being the class of the field with three wins out of three.

Heat one had a false start as Tom McSweeney’s diff failed as the green flag dropped, the rest of the grid making urgent avoiding moves to get around the stricken Fiesta.  His absence from the second attempt saw just seven cars negotiate the first few laps, Neville Stanley leading them away until Compelli took a lead that would become familiar territory for him as the afternoon unfolded. Des Cooney and Tom Casey (the SLK now shipshape again) raced through for second and third ahead of David O’Regan and Damien Mulvey.  Stanley fell back through the order to finish ahead of newcomer Denis MacSweeney in his second outing in the John O’Regan 206.

Heat two and McSweeney was still replacing his failed diff, so the same seven took the start.  Compelli was swiftly under the 967 Peugeot to take up another unchallenged lead, but this time Casey got the better of Cooney for second place, the rest of the field finishing in the same order as race one.

The final was perhaps the best race of the day with several fascinating dices through the field. Mulvey sat this one out, but McSweeney was back, albeit with the wrong diff for Tipperary, so he started from the back of the grid.  Compelli sealed his successful day with another dominant display for the win - the blue Tigra well able to withstand any challenge. Casey made an inside pass on Cooney stick for second place, Cooney completing the podium from O’Regan, Stanley, McSweeney and MacSweeney.
Heat 1: 777 921 961 208 955 967 308
Heat 2: 777 961 921 208 955 967 308
Final: 777 961 921 208 967 982 308

2010 World Series round 06 - Tipperary - Sunday September 13th 2009
Ten cars took to the track, which appeared to have been transported to somewhere in the Mediterranean - the sun blazed down on Tipperary Motor Speedway in glorious fashion for the whole meeting.

Whilst points leader Tom Casey remained sidelined some two weeks after serious damage to his SLK, the regulars were joined by the returning Damien Mulvey 955, Tom McSweeney 982, and National Hot Rod rookie Denis MacSweeney 308.  Denis is a regular in the Tipperary Production class, and is the brother-in-law of David O’Regan. He raced his father-in-law 908 John’s SHP 206.

Heat one saw David Casey retire from a prime position with an engine malady, so it was Des Cooney who took the chequers ahead of O’Connell and Mulvey, those drivers being the only ones able to complete passes on the tricky McSweeney Fiesta. Shane Murphy had to retire to the infield for health and safety reasons after his drivers door parted company with his 206CC.

Heat two saw Casey’s car keep it all together this time for a good win ahead of Cooney, Murphy, Mulvey and Neville Stanley. Mulvey and Stanley crossed the line as one, Mulvey getting the verdict from the official lap-scorer.  This race saw McSweeney forced into retirement after a mighty punt from the O’Connell 206 exiting turn two, a manouevre that saw Brendan black-flagged into the same fate.

It was Des Cooney who took the lap of honour after the final, as first across the line Casey was docked two places for an ill-judged dive into Mulvey early in the race. The Mulvey car, incidentally, is now not only a tidily presented car, but a tidy handling piece of kit too, driver and machine looking more like contenders as each race goes by. Second place was his reward, Les Compelli and O’Regan completing the top five. After the bruising encounter last time out, it was a relief for all drivers to take their cars home in one piece.
Heat 1: 921 761 955 982 777 967 208 308
Heat 2: 261 921 970 955 967 777 208 308 (761 disq)

2010 World Series round 05 - Tipperary - Sunday August 30th 2009
Another damp and drizzly day - although a vast improvement on the previous round, the Nationals managed one clutch start race - saw nine cars continue the quest for world qualifying points at Tipperary. 761 Brendan O’Connell joined the regulars in his older 206 and partnered pole-sitter Eddie Wall’s SLK on the front row of each race.

Heat one saw several drivers struggle with the wet track which led to some ambitious defending and attacking moves. This culminated in David O’Regan and Wall taking the chequered flag sideways across the line and onto the infield, though the 208 Tigra picked up a two-place penalty for an earlier infringement.

The second race was ended prematurely by a racing incident that saw Tom Casey collect the home straight wall and Neville Stanley somersault and then slide on his roof to a stop in turn one. Both men walked away from their spectacular demise, Casey’s SLK went back in the truck requiring a new axle, panels and other parts, whilst the 967 team miraculously got the 206cc out for the next race, although clearly requiring further repairs.  In the result taken from the last recorded lap, David Casey took the victory from Shane Murphy and Les Compelli.

The track was at its driest and fastest for the final, although still with a couple of tricky damp patches to be negotiated.  The battle at the front saw Des Cooney make a good pass on David C for the victory, they were followed home by Murphy, Wall, Stanley and O’Connell, after Compelli and O’Regan were excluded from the results for an untidy tussle that continued after the race was finished.
Heat 1: 420 961 208(X-2) 921 261 970 777 967

2010 World Series round 04 - Tipperary - Sunday August 23rd 2009
On a day when even NASCAR jet blowers would have been as effective as a hair drier, Tipperary Motor Speedway was visted by the heaviest rain of the season causing the deferment of one heat until conditions became raceable.

Eight cars were present with Eddie Wall and Neville Stanley filling the front row for all three rolling starts, heat one having the best of the weather, the rain abating from making the track any wetter for one race at least. Wall’s SLK didn’t look too at home in the conditions, David Casey found some grip on the inside line to relieve the cars ahead of him of the lead, followed home by the returning Shane Murphy, Stanley and Tom Casey.

Heat two made an aborted start in a mini monsoon.  David C and Murphy were victims of a treacherous surface with minimal visibilty, and the decision was taken to postpone the restart and run two other races in the hope conditions might improve.  When the time came to rerun the race, conditions had imrpoved marginally and the race successfully ran its course minus David C who sat out the rest of the day.  Stanley made the best break, finishing ahead of Les Compelli, Murphy, Tom C, David O’Regan and Des Cooney - who had earlier clouted the turn three wall.

The final saw a still very wet track but the rain had eased now. This race was all about the outside line bravery of Murphy and some dogged defending by Stanley.  At times the silver 206cc appeared to double in width attracting the attention of race officials who, in the final analysis, dropped Stanley two places for his troubles, awarding the win to Murphy from Tom C, with O’Regan claiming fourth ahead of Compelli and Wall.

2010 World Series round 03 - Tipperary - Sunday August 9th 2009
All bar one of last week’s travellers to England for the National Championship appeared at Tipperary’s third round of the 2010 world qualifying series on August  9th - Shane Murphy being the notable absentee.  They were joined by Eddie Wall’s SLK and Tom McSweeney in his ever-increasingly battle-scarred Fiesta which is surely heading for a major restoration sometime soon.

McSweeney was on pole for all three races at a pleasantly mild and cloudy raceway, but it was Neville Stanley who took the first win once McSweeney started to hold an acceptable racing line. Plenty of battles went on behind, David O’Regan heading fellow young gun David Casey home to complete the podium.

Heat two saw Stanley victorious again after a defensive drive to hold off Tom Casey and O’Regan in third.  A yellow flag period revealed that McSweeney had a Raceceiver problem and he was removed from the results for not responding correctly to flag and verbal instructions.

The final was run in the aftermath of a short but heavy shower, the wet track necessitating a rolling start. McSweeney romped off into an unchallenged lead in this one, a train formed behind headed by Stanley from Les Compelli, O’Regan, Tom C, Des Cooney and David C, and that’s how they finished.  The only other driver present not to figure in the results was Pat O’Sullivan.

2010 World Series round 02 - Tipperary - Sunday July 26th 2009
Unpredictable weather took a hand in influencing the quality of the racing and the drivers’ ability to overtake at the second round of the Irish world series at Tipperary Motor Speedway on July 26th.

Eight cars were on hand to contest this meeting, Limerick’s Pat O’Sullivan (294) replacing the absent Neville Stanley, Eddie Wall and Damien Mulvey. Tom McSweeney found some reliability in his elderly Fiesta, O’Sullivan struggling this time, unable to make a race start until the final.

Des Cooney’s hat-trick last time out promoted him to stone last on the grid, Tom Casey getting an unusually forward grid slot this time out. This he duly capitalised on with a victory in heat one on a damp track, ahead of son David in second. Cooney made good progress into third ahead of Shane Murphy and Les Compelli.

A dry track for heat two saw an exciting clutch start that propelled O’Regan into a lead that withstood plenty of pressure from Tom C. David C. again followed home for third this time, Murphy and Compelli duplicating their heat one finish.

The final saw the track wet once again for a rolling start, O’Regan again taking the lead and holding off Tom C. Despite lots of attempts by several drivers to find an outside line, the track conditions generally only helped those racers fall down the order and start their quest for progress once again.  An unlikely result saw the cars mirror exactly the order of heat two down to sixth place, O’Sullivan and McSweeney completing the finishers. The majority of the Irish contingent racing today will have the opportunity to test their racecraft on a much more crowded track next weekend as they head off to the National Championships at Hednesford Hills raceway.

2010 World Series round 01 - Tipperary - Sunday July 19th 2009
Des Cooney made full use of an unusually generous pole position for all three races with a 100% win rate at the first round of the new season’s world qualifying at Tipperary Motor Speedway.

An afternoon of fine weather marred only by a brief but heavy shower just prior to heat two saw many of the crowd and teams topping up their Ipswich sun tans gained just a fortnight earlier. Ten cars had arrived to get some early world series points on the chart, but only nine achieved this with 955 Damien Mulvey failing to get beyond practice. 982 Tom McSweeney bore out the scrutineer’s permission to start from the back of the grid, as his unreliable Fiesta only completed about three racing laps in the two races he managed to attempt to start. All the driver/car combinations were as expected, Neville Stanley opting for the ex-Souter CC but falling victim to a faulty timing sensor halfway through the afternoon.

961 Tom Casey collected the first black cross of the season for excessive contact on Stanley in the first heat, 970 Shane Murphy receiving similar (but rescinded post-race) for a coming together with 420 Eddie Wall in the second race. The final probably saw the best duel of the afternoon as Murphy challenged Cooney all the way to the chequers with a fine display of side-by-side Hot Rod action.  Casey finished in the mix in third, 208 David O’Regan continuing his promising shows with fourth, 777 Les Compelli taking fifth from 261 David Casey in sixth.

2009 World Series round 11 - Tipperary - Sunday 12th April 2009
With no “visiting” drivers, the entry took on a more familiar look for the second meeting of 2009. This world series round saw three different winners for the first time since August 2008 - Des Cooney, Damien Mulvey and Brendan O’Connell taking the spoils.

Joey Butler was absent from the grid having blown his engine at round 10, and O’Connell was back in his ex-Clein CC after an excursion north of the border on Friday evening.  Eleven cars raced, and all finished all three races bar Orey Stanley whose driveshaft expired in heat one.

2009 World Series round 10 - Tipperary - Sunday 5th April 2009
After all the lack of racing over recent months, it was good to be back at the raceway, under new management. Lots of cars and news, so here's a quick run down of who was there, and in what:
SEE PAUL WHELAN’S PHOTOS IN THE GALLERY
955 Damien Mulvey - usual car, new Ford RS orange paint
57 Mike Oliver - usual car, fresh from a Welsh circuit outing
761 Brendan O'Connell - older "for sale" car, CC not race ready
923 Orey Stanley - usual car, but Orey had lowered the rear wing to just 6" or so above the boot
420 Eddie Wall - new SLK, started from the back of the regular grid due to bedding in brakes. Had a "moment" in heat one as the steering wheel came off in his hand!
967 Neville Stanley - used his newly imported Waine Souter 206cc, but blew the diff in practice and missed all the racing
151 Joey Butler - usual car
970 Shane Murphy - usual car but with his rear wing completely removed. Shane doesn't believe it offered any benefit anyway, and has built more weight into the back of the CC. Nice new paintwork on the top half of the car plus his European Champion red/yellow chequers
921 Des Cooney - Usual car, new paint and signwriting
961 Tom Casey - New SLK, white over red, built in record time
261 David Casey - Dad's Corrado, blew diff in heat one, sat out rest of day
208 David O'Regan - ex-Sylvia Tobin car
906 Eddie Foott - usual car

Plus: three of what the commentator called "visiting drivers" from Waterford Raceway:
123 Patrick Noonan in an ex-(briefly) Stanley Saxo
60 Tommy Kiely in an ex-Stanley SHP 206 - chassis no. 16
21 John Shanahan in the still very Mark McKinstry-looking ex-McKinstry SHP 206 chassis no. 32

Following a full inquiry by race officials into the incident in heat two involving drivers 142 Mike Riordan and 74 James O’Shea, the steward of the meeting has issued the following penalties:

Driver 142 Mike Riordan is “loaded-up” from this meeting (all points and prize-monies are forfeit).  In addition, Riordan has been issued a 10-race meeting ban. 4 meetings of this ban are conditionally suspended, so the driver may if he chooses, return to racing after 6 RoI World Series meetings have passed.  The driver also has the right to appeal this decision to the NHRPA if he wishes.

2008 World Series round 13 - Tipperary - Sunday April 6th 2008
An excellent entry of 18 National Hot Rods faced up to a bitterly cold raceday which featured hail, sleet and bright sunshine as the afternoon unfolded. Fortunately the worst of the weather abated each time the Nationals were on track and the large grid of cars was able to put on a good show for the hardy spectators.

Notable amongst the entry was Ulster teenager William “Buck” Buller, christening his one-meeting old Tigra in the Republic, gaining a second signature on his provisional NHRPA licence, and getting valuable track-time in what is a new class to him.  A pretty good account he gave of himself too, the car looking well-balanced and the driver able to pass inside or outside at will, looking perhaps the quickest package on the day.

After impressing in heat one, Buller retired with a lap to go as Brendan O’Connell took the chequers from Shane Murphy who snuck past Des Cooney on the last lap, Eddie Wall seemingly collecting a black cross for an earlier indiscretion.

Eamon O’Donovan finally took advantage of his generous grid slot and capitalised to win heat two from the former owner of his Colt, Mike Riordan and Les Compelli held on for third ahead of the fast-charging Buller.

O’Donovan again dominated the final, finishing ahead of Orey and Neville Stanley respectively, and Anthony Butler looking comfortable in fourth.  A penalty may follow for Tom Casey as officials review how Des Cooney was spun onto the infield with about 5 laps to run.

2008 World Series round 12 - Tipperary - Monday March 24th 2008
Easter Monday at Tipperary Motor Speedway featured 16 National Hot Rods, on a track that despite initial greasiness from a couple of showers, was actually pretty raceable ultimately.

The grid featured the return from South Africa of the usual mounts of Neville Stanley, Les Compelli and Joey Butler, though Neville failed to make the start of heat one.

Brendan O'Connell made the most of his front row start by winning all three of the races pretty comfortably - Joey Butler probably offering the sternest challenge in the final.

The final itself took a couple of attempts to get going after Neville Stanley and Sylvia Tobin respectively, both got spat out of some untidy rolling starts. Not a good omen for what surprisingly unfolded, an unusual feat for Rosegreen, in that (according to my notes at least) all 16 cars that started, finished!

2008 World Series round 11 - Tipperary - Sunday March 2nd 2008
The international raceday on March 2nd saw a small bit of history made, as the Spedeworth 2.0l Hot Rods made their Republic of Ireland debut, accompanied by a World Series round for National Hot Rods and international entries in both the Stock Rods and Lightning Rods. The 2.0l Hot Rods presented a reasonable entry in the mid-teens, almost but not quite entirely made up of Ulster travellers, joined by the sole English visitor, Kim Weaver.

The 2.0l’s racing improved as the afternoon progressed and the drivers and their cars got a handle on the Rosegreen track, Andy Best taking the honours in the final.  Wayne Woolsey brought with him a pretty handy looking 2.0l Tigra which - had he not been beset by various misfortunes - looked ominously like the quickest car out there, and also raced with the National Hot Rods in a “for sale” 206cc.

Woolsey was joined in swelling the local National Hot Rod grid by the Maxwell brothers.  Terry raced a familiar looking 206, whilst Tommy campaigned what appeared to be the ex-Richard Lee SWM 206. Of note amongst the home entry was Orey Stanley taking a turn in the Barry English 206 whilst Barry was holidaying.  Eamon O’Donovan was banished to the back of the grid for again not being in possession of the required NHRPA licence

This week it was Mike Riordan’s turn for three pretty straightforward wins out of three, from a grid position with little traffic ahead of him. Some good battles were played out in all three races though, mostly featuring Tom Casey, Des Cooney, Eddie Wall, Shane Murphy and Brendan O’Connell. The next outing for the National Hot Rods in Ireland will be round 12 on Easter Monday.

All results are as seen trackside and should not be considered official.

2008 World Series round 10 - Tipperary - Sunday February 25th 2008
A slightly unusual looking line-up was assembled as the NHRPA carried out their threatened sanction of not allocating grid positions to unlicenced drivers. Barry English and Orey Stanley thus had to spend the afternoon starting behind their main world qualifying rivals, and they were joined by the similarly offending Eamon O’Donovan. Whether the NHRPA recognises their “unlicenced results” for the points chart remains to be seen... Fourteen cars once again were in attendance.

Volunteering to start from even further back on the grids - although complete with required documents - were Eddie Wall, Eddie Foott and Sylvia Tobin.  Sylvia took up her outside front row start for the final in her now immaculate looking black Tigra after missing heat two with a misfire.  Orey Stanley failed to start heat one with seized brakes, Barry English lucked out on heat two with a blown diff. Newcomer Trevor Cusack continued his probationary period, looking quite at home in his 206.

James O’Shea made the best use of his fortuitous row 2 start for the day with three pretty untroubled wins, Tom Casey declining to make his life difficult in the first two heats by opting to protect his runners-up points.  The final came to an early end as an incident involving English and Stanley culminated in the 923 machine being planted in the back straight wall.

2008 World Series round 9 - Tipperary - Sunday February 10th 2008
Fourteen racers took to the track for the first race on what was a cold but dry Tipperary raceday. Although the South African tour party were back on home soil, only Barry English swelled the entry by racing his car which hadn’t travelled.  For the rest, the cars are containered-up and ready to start their long journey back to the British Isles on February 19th - a sailing that is scheduled for 21 days if they return direct, or 28 days if their voyage goes via Holland.

Welshman Mike Oliver made his first competitive start of the year, collecting a broken bumper in heat one, and then demonstrating his green credentials by running his 205 without the aid of petrol in heat two. Needless to say he was soon parked up on the infiield. Former Cork-grasser Trevor Cusack (925) made his National Hot Rod debut in the ex-Dermot Meenehan/Joey Butler 206, now painted white with orange bumpers, and the final interesting entry was Sylvia Tobin in her fresh-off-the-ferry all new Ludlow Tigra.  As yet unpainted and unsignwritten, it looked pretty handy straight “out of the box”, and with its power-steering, Sylvia declared it much easier to race than her for-sale 206.

The racing was notable for perhaps seeing the final demise of Tom McSweeney’s venerable ex-Sean Murphy Autocross Fiesta.  In fairness, it wasn’t in the best of shape at the start of racing - the car perhaps having had more filler than panels for some seasons now - but a heavy impact with the turn one wall in a racing incident with Tom Casey and Shane Murphy, left the red and white machine very twisted and broken, possibly with a broken engine too.

Heat results are from race control, final result as seen trackside, to be confirmed.

2008 World Series round 8 - Tipperary - Sunday January 27th 2008
The brightest and mildest day of the year so far welcomed racing back to Tipperary Motor Speedway for 2008.  With the Judge due to deliver the High Court’s verdict as to whether racing can continue to take place, in around three week’s time, there was a general feeling of uncertainty amongst the reasonable attendance.  This didn’t affect the racing however, which continued at its usual standard.

Thirteen National Hot Rods took to the track for the first race, a pretty fair number considering the four absentees flying the flag for Ireland in South Africa. Returning after varying lengths of absence to Rose Green were Tom McSweeney, Eddie Wall, Eamon O’Donovan and Eddie Foott

2008 World Series round 7 - Tipperary - Thursday 27th December 2007
The wet and windy weather at the Christmas meeting and final racing of 2007 certainly conspired to put a dampener on the festive season at Tipperary. Although there were a few absentees, the returns of Brendan O’Connell and Anthony Butler, combined with Neville Stanley in the loaned Barry English 206, and Joey Butler continuing with the borrowed James O’Shea Fiesta, and the rest of the regulars saw the entry at a reasonable 11 cars.

2008 World Series round 6 - Tipperary - Sunday 25th November 2007
Sales, purchases and loans of cars, holidays, and three cars being shipped to South Africa for the international winter series there, saw the Tipperary grid slightly depleted (12 cars) and looking a little unfamiliar. Joey Butler won all three races in the borrowed #74 Fiesta, Dermot Meenehan raced the older #74 206. Des Cooney unveiled his stunning new silver and orange refurbished 206cc, whilst Neville Stanley campaigned a freshly imported Zetec-powered black Citroen Saxo just for the day.

2007 World Series round 16 - Tipperary - Monday June 4th 2007
Ireland’s final 2007 World Series round saw Tom Casey confirmed as the NHRPA’s £500 points winner, and the other four drivers to join him at next month’s World Championships as Barry English (who didn’t race following his major accident at Ipswich last week), Shane Murphy, Neville Stanley and Des Cooney.  A goodly entry of seventeen cars featured, including visitor 996 Stewart Doak from Northern Ireland, putting more development miles on his new Tigra.  Casey and Mike Riordan shared the heat wins, and Mike Oliver, after third and second place heat results, went one better for victory in the final from pole position.

Anorak notes:  Boss Motors’ new rear aerofoil featuring two horizontals and small vertical winglets was trialled by Des Cooney on his 206cc in practice but removed for racing due to no noticeable improvement, but another such piece of kit featured for the whole meeting on Tom Casey’s Corrado. 46 Declan Burke successfully collected his third signature for a full NHRPA licence.

Next meeting for National Hot Rods at Tipperary is the Tom Casey Tyre Challenge on June 17, with 6 Hoosier Tyres up for grabs.

2007 World Series round 15 - Tipperary - Sunday May 27th 2007
The penultimate World Series round at Tipperary was short of two regular racers as Tom Casey and Barry English were on their way to race at Ipswich, but still a reasonable grid of twelve cars ultimately raced. Ultimately, because Malcolm Clein arrived too late for the drivers briefing and grid draw, and Shane Murphy blew his engine in practice but raced the local-class Hot Rod of Eamonn O’Donovan from heat two onwards.  Heat one saw a lengthy caution period to retrieve the Mike Riordan Tigra from the turn 3 wall, heat two was probably the most exciting racing of the day after a shower left the track in a tricky damp state, and the repaired Mike Riordan went on to take victory in the final from his advantageous grid placing. Sylvia Tobin attained her third provisional licence signature and is now a full NHRPA licence holder

2007 World Series round 13 - Tipperary - Sunday April 29th 2007
An improved entry from the previous World Series round featured the National-class debut of Declan Burke (46) in the ex-Riordan Colt, the christening of Shane Murphy’s Mini-to-206cc conversion, and the returns after a couple of meetings absence of Tom McSweeney and Eddie Foott snr. Heat wins were shared by Murphy and Barry English, with Malcolm Clein victorious in the final.

2007 World Series round 12 - Tipperary - Monday April 9th 2007
Easter Monday at Tipperary saw Des Cooney debut his new 206cc and Eddie Wall try out his new ex-Pat Casey 206 in a poorly attended meeting.  Ten cars were present, though a newcomer and returnee respectively - Declan Burke (46) in the ex-Riordan Colt and Joey Carroll (143) in a tidy white 206 - opted to race in the local Hot Rod class. Just six cars then took part in the grid draw, Wall and Sylvia Tobin choosing to race off the back as they pick up pace.  Notable incident of the day was a race stopping impact with the wall by Neville Stanley in the final as his steering wheel apparently detached on the exit of turn 4.

2007 World Series round 11 - Tipperary - Sunday March 25th 2007
The best raceday weather of the year greeted an entry of 14 cars although only 13 subsequently competed. The meeting marked the National-class debut for Sylvia Tobin (87) and the graduation of Orey Stanley (875) from provisional to full NHRPA licence status; he once again raced the Team Haird 115 Fiesta.  Des Cooney (921) kept his qualification hopes on course by chalking up a few points at the wheel of Mike Oliver’s 205, and Eddie Foott Jr (907) continued to gain experience racing his 205 in the local Hot Rod class. Shane Murphy (970) showed some terrific pace all afternoon, winning the first heat and the final, the second heat going the way of Barry English (984). The only major incident of the day involved James O’Shea (74) being shown a black-cross for ignoring blue flags in heat two, only to lose control all by himself immediately afterwards, colliding with the turn 1/2 wall and knocking himself out momentarily.

2007 World Series round 10 - Tipperary - Monday March 19th 2007
St. Patrick may have originally come from Wales, but on the holiday Monday in his honour it was another Welshman, Mike Oliver, who enjoyed a great mission to Ireland. A disappointing entry saw twelve cars present, although Sylvia Tobin elected to debut her beautifully presented ex-Eddie Wall 206 in the local Hot Rod class for the day. Hotfoot from Hednesford the previous afternoon was Joey Butler making a home debut for his new Duratec powerplant, accompanied by the Haird Motorsport similarly-powered 115 Fiesta in Orey Stanley’s hands this time.   Dreadful weather went through extremes of hailstones to heavy rain to bright sunshine - all accompanied with gale-force wind - several times during the afternoon, keeping everyone on their toes

2007 World Series round 8 - Tipperary - Sunday February 11th 2007

Mike Riordan took advantage of two front-row starts to win a heat and the final on February 11th at Tipperary, the other heat going the way of Des Cooney.  Points of interest from this meeting were former Stock Rodder Orey Stanley making an impressive debut on a provisional licence at the wheel of the Haird Motorsport Fiesta, and his father Neville christening his new 206cc (rather too literally in the final when he had a quite hard impact with the home straight wall).

2007 World Series round 7 - Tipperary - Wednesday December 27th 2006.

Mike Riordan returned to racing on December 27th with a heat and final double victory, Des Cooney heading the first heat from an 18-car entry bolstered by Euro/Nat Champ Keith Martin in his new 206cc, and Davy Clarke from NI too, in Ronnie McMillan's regular 206.

Eddie Foott debuted his newly acquired ex-Eddie McGrath 206, Shane Murphy debuted his new ex-Rob Hadfield bus and Neville Stanley once again had a yellow 115-206cc imported from England for the day, Mark Meenehan had the use of the James O'Shea 206 but joined the local Hot Rod class all afternoon.  The only car to race but not feature in the results was 930 Dermot Meenehan.

Round 8 will take place on February 4th, round 9 on February 18th.

2007 World Series round 6 - Tipperary - Sunday November 19th 2006.

At the penultimate meeting of the year, gale-force wind and driving rain actually led to some quite watchable racing.  No doubt more enjoyable for the participants than the hardy spectators and raceway officials. Joey Butler took a notable heat and final double, Tom Casey dominating the other heat.  Brendan “Tubs” O’Connell 761 made his debut in the ex-Clein 206, Neville Stanley raced the Chris Haird cc once again, fifteen cars were in attendance.

Round 7 will take place on a no-doubt even chillier 27th December at the slightly earlier start time of 1pm.

2007 World Series round 5 - Tipperary - Monday October 30th 2006.

After officials were unable to agree his part, if any, in Tom McSweeney’s demise, Tom Casey emerged with the final victory on holiday Monday 30th October.  The meeting was notable for two car changes for regular Irish campaigners Neville Stanley and Des Cooney.  Stanley raced Chris Haird’s 206cc which was en-route from the NEC Birmingham to London’s Earls Court - via Rathdowney and Rosegreen(!) - where it is taking part in Jeremy Clarkson’s Top Gear-type live roadshow.  Neville raced somewhat carefully in order to preserve presenter James May’s “Captain Slow” signwriting, but certainly showed a return to the form he is noted for. Des Cooney borrowed European and National Champion Keith Martin’s 206 - his own car still recovering from the European weekend’s action.  Twelve cars were in attendance.

2007 World Series round 4 - Tipperary - October 1st 2006.

Fifteen cars raced at the fourth Irish World Series round on a day that proved October really has welcomed autumn in. Les Compelli won the rainswept final, after Des Cooney headed the only dry heat, and Tom Casey the other - which had to be postponed and rerun after a sudden monsoon at the first attempt.

World Series round 12 - Tipperary - March 26
After sharing the heat wins with Des Cooney, Neville Stanley claimed final honours on March 26, despite crossing the finish line backwards after an indiscretion by second placed Shane Murphy exiting the final turn. Not to be outdone, Les Compelli managed to complete the race sideways past the chequered flag, on a day that saw the wettest conditions of the season.

In the pits were two newly completed race transporters ready for international duty, one for team KTS Racing (Des Cooney) and the other for the NOS Racing Team (Neville and Orey Stanley).

World Series round 10 - Tipperary - February 26
Fourteen cars raced at World Series 10, Joey Butler continuing where he left off at the last round by winning the final after Shane Murphy and Tom Casey shared the heat wins. James O’Shea returned to the fray with his tidy looking Focus-into-206 conversion sporting his familiar white and yellow colours. Ian McReynolds once again made the long journey down from the North though his Saxo looked a little unpredictable in the final, lacking its rear aerofoil. Messiest race of the day was the first heat, Anthony Butler receiving the black flag for his part in causing a stoppage on lap 6 to retrieve the Des Cooney and Malcolm Clein cars. Les Compelli also collected a disqualification during the incident for a member of his team coming onto the track during the stoppage - an action expressly forbidden for obvious reasons in all classes unless authorised by the Clerk of the Course and announced by the commentator - as instructed to all drivers at the previous race meeting.

World Series round 8 - Tipperary - January 8

World Series 8 at Tipperary on January 8 saw back-on-form Des Cooney and regular pace-setter Barry English share the heat wins, and final pole sitter Tom McSweeney take the feature victory for the second meeting in a row. Major talking point of the event though was Neville Stanley’s huge impact with the wall/pit gate in heat two. Something broke in the steering assembly causing the Laois man one of the biggest single car crashes seen in recent times at the raceway - thankfully he walked away from what was left of his now well-punished Ford Puma.

World Series round 4 - Tipperary - October 31

A disappointing twelve cars appeared for World Series 4 on Irish bank holiday Monday 31st October as the weather did its best to dampen proceedings.  However, the drivers made the best of the conditions with some drifting displays and genuine attempts to master the greasy track and its unpredictable lines. Eddie Wall took his first ever final win after thwarting all that took to his outside with some canny and controlled racing, heats going the way of Joey Butler and Shane Murphy.

World Series 1 - Tipperary - August 28

The Irish World Series 2006 commenced on Sunday August 28th, with an excellent 16 car total at Tipperary Raceway. Notable entries were Pat Casey in his new ex-Cooney/O'Donnell/English 206 and newcomer Anthony Butler (brother of Joey) in the ex-Pat Casey Focus. James O'Shea was campaigning the ex-McClure 206.

The first opportunity for Ireland to sample the new NHRPA grids was deemed popular by just about everyone - except maybe Neville Stanley who didn't really get to experience it. After receiving the green flag and all the cars entering the home straight on lap one of the first heat, Neville suddenly found himself popped out of the pack and heading for the wall at great speed. The inevitable happened, the Puma T-boning the wall extremely hard, twisting, bending and breaking an awful lot of the front end of the car, and the back end getting a pounding too. Fortunately Neville was okay, the Puma - only recently straightened after Hednesford - not so. Heat wins went to Joey Butler and Shane Murphy, with Pat Canavan making full use of his temporarily handy front row grid to take the final from Murphy and Les Compelli.

Grid from the hat for heat one and reversed for heat two was:
151 985 967 - 99 939 177 982 179 (A. Butler)
906 74 28 961 970 142 921 121
Heat 1: 151 961 142 985 177 970 121 939 99 921
Heat 2: 970 961 121 921 939 151 142(X-2) 177 99 74 985 179
Final grid:
177 99 982 142 970 921 906
939 74 121 985 151 961 179
Final: 939 970 177 142 921 985 99 151 121 74 961 179
